The World Anti-Doping Agency(WDA) has through a key panel recommended that Russia be slammed with a four-year ban from competing in any sporting activities over its non-compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code

In a statement released on the 25th of November, the recommendation by the Compliance Review Committee was based on a forensic review of inconsistencies found in some of the data that was obtained by the agency from the Moscow lab in January. Although the recommendation has been criticized by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said it amounted to one more western effort to sideline Russia, the statement said the final decision will rest with WADA’s Executive Committee which will consider the recommendation and the proposed consequences on December 9.

Besides the ban from major sporting events, the recommendation also includes banning Russia from hosting major competitions and from bidding for such events.

Plans are underway to ensure Russian athletes apply to compete as ‘neutrals’ in upcoming competitions, although the decision is not final yet.

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has approved the suspension of seven senior officers and one junior official of the Nigerian Correctional Service over the electrocution of five inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos.

This, it said, was to facilitate investigation into the incident, where seven other inmates were injured on Monday.

Sources learnt that preliminary investigation had indicted the eight personnel for negligence.

A letter signed by the Secretary of the Board, Mallam Hassan Yakmut, stated that the indicted officers were placed on suspension pending “the determination of the Discipline and General Purpose Committee of the Board.”

A statement by the NCS spokesman, Controller of Corrections, Francis Enobore in Abuja on Friday, read, “The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has approved the suspension of seven senior and one junior personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service over the unfortunate electrocution of five inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Lagos, in order to facilitate unfettered investigation into the sad incident.”

The service had earlier said the cell where the five inmates died was holding 140 persons instead of the 35 it was meant to keep, adding that the custodial centre, built in 1955 for 800 inmates had a population of 3,113 inmates with 2,680 awaiting trial persons.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, during his visit to the facility ordered a probe into the incident and directed that necessary actions be taken to prevent future occurrence.

He said: “Our opponents are wicked, therefore, we need to be united. The nature of elections as seen throughout the federation are now being militarized brazenly.

“The forthcoming elections can only be won by landslide, therefore, I urge all parties to stand united and coalesce as one body so that when they come with their thugs from Lagos we shall resist them.

“The APC government in the state lack competence and compassion. They can’t do anything without getting approval from Lagos. Ogun State is not Lagos subsidiary.“We are on a mission to rescue our state from incompetence, lack of compassion of APC government.”
